Annapurna Base Camp Trek – The Complete Guide from Pokhara
At 4,130 meters above sea level, surrounded on all sides by some of the highest mountains on earth, Annapurna Base Camp delivers one of the most overwhelming natural spectacles available to a non-technical Himalayan trekker. The route from Pokhara to ABC follows the Modi Khola river through subtropical forests, Gurung villages, rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and glacial moraines — a journey of extraordinary ecological and cultural diversity that culminates in a 360-degree wall of snow-covered giants.
Hotel Crown Himalayas is Pokhara's ideal starting point for the ABC trek, providing pre-trek accommodation, equipment advice, permit procurement, licensed guide and porter arrangements, and a warm welcome on your return.
The ABC Trek Route
The classic itinerary takes 10–13 days round trip from Pokhara:
- Days 1–2: Pokhara to Ghandruk (1,940m) via Nayapul — first Gurung village with mountain views
- Days 3–4: Ghandruk to Chhomrong (2,170m) — crossing the Kimrong Khola, steep ascent through terraced farmland
- Days 5–6: Chhomrong to Himalaya Hotel (2,920m) — entering the Modi Khola gorge, rhododendron and bamboo forest
- Day 7: Himalaya Hotel to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) via Machhapuchchhre Base Camp (3,700m) — the most dramatic day; the walls close in and the mountains loom
- Day 8: Rest and acclimatization at ABC; optional pre-dawn summit glow photography
- Days 9–11: Return descent to Pokhara via alternative route through Bamboo, Sinuwa, and Jhinu Danda (hot springs at Jhinu — a perfect recovery stop)
Difficulty & Fitness Requirements
The ABC trek is classified as moderate to moderately challenging. No technical mountaineering experience or equipment is required. However, the trek involves 5–7 hours of walking per day on uneven mountain terrain, with significant ascent and descent. Guests with a reasonable base level of fitness who can comfortably walk for several hours can complete this trek successfully with proper preparation.
Best Season for the ABC Trek
- October–December: Best mountain views, stable weather, peak trekking season
- March–May: Rhododendron forests in bloom, good visibility, warmer temperatures
- December–February: Snow at higher elevations; cold but dramatically beautiful; fewer trekkers
- June–September: Monsoon; trails can be slippery, leeches at lower elevations, but possible on good days
Permits Required
- ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit): NPR 3,000 (approximately USD $23)
- TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System): NPR 2,000 (approximately USD $15)
